I bet the new Toyota AvGo is a perfectly ordinary car that they already sell in other countries, and they were just waiting for Americans to wake up and realize how cool it would be to have a 51-mpg urban car.

Don’t let the 3-cylinder engine fool you; it’ll get around just fine. I once had a Geo Metro XFI with a 3-cyl engine, and it had plenty of zoom (just not insane amounts of zoom). It also got 50 mpg in town, which was a nice feature.

But I didn’t like its flimsy construction, (stuff was always breaking) and it lacked air conditioning which made it unpopular with MrsDoF. The new Toyota comes with a 5-star collision rating and being a Toyota, will probably beat the Suzuki-made Geo on durability as well.

Probably won’t be able to drive it down a creek bed like my Beetle, though.

Is it OK for babies to watch TV?

The effect of television on children, especially on babies, is an intensely controversial subject. Every year rafts of studies and statistics appear about children's television habits, and some of them may seem alarming.

The average American child watches about four hours of television a day [Source: AAP], while 20 percent of children under 2 have televisions in their rooms. Among babies 3 months old and younger, 40 percent watch TV, with the percentage increasing significantly for children age 2 and younger [Source: Seattle Post-Intelligencer]. A study in 2003 found that children 6 months to 6 years old spend an average of two hours a day dealing with "screen media" like televisions, computers and video games [Source: CBS News]. The study also revealed a correlation between time spent watching television and difficulty reading.

Many of these studies have led doctors, educators and other experts to recommend curbing a child's TV consumption. The campaign received another shot in the arm when a study released in early August 2007 showed that baby-oriented video programs like "Baby Einstein" and "Brainy Baby" may harm child development. These videos, which are widely available on VHS and DVD, contain little dialogue, instead relying on juxtaposed images that frequently aren't related to one another or are difficult to explain. (The study cites lava lamps as one example of an image or concept that's hard to explain to a baby.) But the videos are tremendously popular: The "Baby Einstein" series has earned more than $500 million in revenue [Source: Boston Globe] and Disney purchased the company in 2001 [Source: Denver Post].

Many parents say that they use these videos like babysitters, turning on a "Baby Einstein" DVD for their children so that mom and dad can clean up the house, prepare dinner or take care of other chores. But the problem, researchers say, is that these videos don't provide the benefits they claim, and they may even do harm.

The problem lies not only in the videos' content -- little dialogue or interactivity and rapidly changing images -- but also with how babies' brains develop. A child's brain is very sensitive before age 2. It's still developing neural connections and growing in size. Because of this sensitivity, it's important for babies to have a lot of interactive stimulation to learn and develop. The researchers contend that the videos don't provide this stimulation.

How can someone stay awake for 11 days?

Have you ever pulled an all-nighter to study for a test or get a project done for work? How about doing it 11 days in a row? A man in Cornwall, England, actually went 11 consecutive days without a wink of sleep.

Tony Wright, a 42-year-old horticulturalist, claims he has beaten the record of 264 hours (exactly 11 days) set in 1964 by 17-year-old American Randy Gardner. Wright had some practice: he had already been through more than 100 sleep deprivation experiments, with the longest one lasting eight days. He also employed a unique diet that comprised only raw foods. Wright claims that his regimen of salad, avocados, bananas, pineapple, nuts, seeds, carrot juice and herbal tea helped his brain to stay awake. He also says that it allowed him to "switch" from one side of his brain to the other when one got tired. (Whales and dolphins are known to employ similar brain-switching techniques, which allow one part of their brain to rest while the other focuses on breathing and other basic functions.)

In order to chronicle his attempt, Wright confined himself to a live music venue called Studio Bar in Penzance, Cornwall, and allowed a Webcam to monitor him the entire time. He also kept a blog for the BBC, though he stopped blogging on the tenth day because he found it too difficult to concentrate enough to write coherently. The public visited Wright at the Studio Bar or kept track of him through his Webcam.

Though it's believed that Wright broke Randy Gardner's sleep deprivation record, the Guinness Book of World Records no longer acknowledges sleep deprivation attempts because they feel that they're too dangerous. Some have also claimed that Gardner's record was already broken by Toimi Soni of Finland, who went 276 hours without sleep, and that the record was in the Guinness Book until they removed the category entirely in1989 [Source: The Times].

How to Reinstall Windows XP

Over the years, PC World has published hundreds of tips for fixing glitches in Microsoft's Windows operating system. But sometimes, the only cure for a Windows malady is a complete reinstallation. Here's how to reinstall Windows XP.

First, locate the Windows CD that shipped with your PC, along with the CDs for your application software. If you downloaded your antivirus, firewall, or other programs, copy those downloads to a CD or to some other type of removable media. (If your system didn't ship with a Windows CD, your reinstallation files are situated on your hard drive; I'll describe how to access them in just a minute.) Also, dig up the instructions that your ISP sent you for configuring your network settings, and keep them close at hand.

Copy the contents of your 'C:\Documents and Settings' folder (or whichever folder you store your personal files on) to a CD or other removable medium. Then grab any other critical data and back it up. It helps to collect the installers for the latest drivers for your PC's graphics card and other hardware, too.

Therefore the war between Xbox360 and PS3 continues..
I presume the target market is aimed at young teens , the youth to young adults.
With that in mind I don't see PS3 consoles overtaking the Xbox360 - in this country - unlike many predicted it would..beacuse the Xbox360 just works out way cheaper , and many people were not prepared to wait for PS3 , when the Xbox console came out...

Xbox 360 vs. PlayStation 3 vs. Nintendo Wii: A Technical Comparison

It's the battle of the ages, played out with a new generation of hardware that, for the first time, appears to leave all but the most high-end gaming PCs in the dust. Opinions about Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3 vary, but it's pretty clear that both devices kick serious butt from a technical perspective. Looking over the specifications, and listening to representatives of both companies, however, I've come away with a few general thoughts.

From a pure processing standpoint, the PS3 appears to beat the Xbox 360, but the first generation PS3 games are not graphically superior to anything that's available on the Xbox 360. The PS3 has a few advantages, however. For example, it's mostly compatible with the millions of existing PlayStation (PS1) and PlayStation 2 (PS2) titles, which is a huge plus (in US and Japan only: European PS3 units lack a compatibility chip, making them far less compatible with previous generation games).

Xbox 360, however, drops the bomb on the PS3 in a few important categories as well. It's HD Media Center Extender experience blows away anything Sony offers on the PS3, and it supports live and recorded HDTV over your home network, along with TV show and movie downloads. Its device connectivity--including direct support for Apple iPod and Sony PSP devices--is top notch. And the hugely compelling Xbox Live service gets even better with Xbox 360. Sony has nothing like it: On the PS3, games are isolated islands of connectivity, allowing gamers only to communicate with others in the same games. Finally, Microsoft took away one of Sony's biggest advantages when it announced a free 1080p upgrade for all existing Xbox 360 units.

And then there's the Nintendo Wii. Nintendo's next-generation console eschews technical prowess for a truly innovative new hand controller system that includes two devices, a remote controller that can double as a classic NES-type controller for older games, and a Nunchuk, which plugs into the Remote Controller and provide additonal functionality. The Remote Controller is wireless and provides gamers with a degree of motion and freedom that is simply unavailable on either the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3: For example, to swing a golf club in Wii Sports, which is bundled with the console, you literally swing the remote controller as if it were a golf club. To hit a baseball, you swing the controller like a bat. This system is much less expensive than Microsoft's and Sony's offerings, and it is much more appealing for kids of all ages. It is also much less compelling to traditional gamers.

I've been hearing several people, including fellow MVPs (Hi, Bharat!), drawing analogies between the new Exchange 2007 connectors and legacy Exchange objects.
At first blush, these analogies seem to be pretty accurate:

Ex2007 Send Connectors are more or less the same as Ex2000 SMTP Connectors.
Ex2007 Receive Connectors are more or less the same as Ex2000 SMTP Virtual Servers.

Like most analogies, they're performing the comparison at some level of abstraction. If you take the analogy too far and confuse it for reality ("the map is not the territory"), you'll logic yourself into mistakes.

Full Blog

Flash fired Moroccan chicken

I love the dusk in Marrakech. I love the cacophony of sound as the musicians start, and the smells as the local lads set up their stalls of food, freshly squeezed juices and other food offerings. Some of their cauldrons look sinister, but others are tempting enough. A chicken leg grilled over coals and smothered with raisins and pine nuts and a mind blowing quantity of garlic is one of the best things I have ever eaten there, a bowl of dishwater flavored with chili the worst. This is my version of the former.

Chicken fillets or bones pieces.
fresh red chili finely chopped
cayenne pepper
2 garlic cloves
a squeeze of lemon juice
olive oil
ground cinnamon
raisons or sultanas
pine nuts
chopped mint

Mix the chicken pieces in a shallow dish together with the chilies, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, cinnamon, sultanas, pine nuts and mint. Leave for at least 20 minutes but and hour would be better if you have it.

Add the marinated chicken pieces into a pan of sizzling oil. Cover over a high heat and cook till golden brown. Turn over and do the other side. Then pour over the marinade and bring to the boil. season with salt and pepper and serve it hot with the pan sauces. As a lunch snack I wrap this up in a piece of flat bread with a few trimmings of lettuce for supper its accompanied by couscous and sliced oranges drizzled with olive oil and dusted coarsely with black pepper with just a hint of cinnamon.

The Web Designer Versus the Web Developer: Who is Right?

For some reason, they have the same goals, but can't seem to agree on the right way to achieve them. Your designer swears that you need a super slick interface with all the bells and whistles and lots of vibrant color to draw the user's attention. Your web developer tells you that you need blue underlined text links and a white background at all times because it is more usable. Both want you to have a successful web site, and neither can tolerate the other's point of view. So who has the right idea?

The answer is... (drumrolll please)... Can I buy a vowel and get back to you?
Let's explore the minds of these two individuals first to see what makes them tick. After that we should be able to finally answer the age-old question of who is right; the web designer or the web developer. (and by "age-old" I mean "internet age old" which is younger than I am, but I digress)

The mind of a web designer

Web designers see the web differently than most. Hip to design ideology, current with design trends, able to spot low resolution graphics in a single glance, these individuals are responsible for bringing pizzazz to the web. Who else would be able to see tabular data and decide that HTML tables where the perfect way to place graphics on a screen? They have stretched the boundaries of the web's infrastructure and turned it into a true media instead of a simple text-based research tool.
These graphical wizards (at least the good ones) understand form and color theory. They understand the visual aspects of marketing and what drives people to react to visual stimulation. They know what looks good, and how to visually brand your company. They know what looks bad, and will likely tell you ambitiously when they spot it. They understand how sight drives feeling. To make your site look and feel the way it should, the web designer is right.
The mind of a web developer
Web developers see the web the same as everybody else should. (at least in theory) Although at times they might not be able to tell you precisely why something is visually appealing, they sure can elaborate on why something doesn't work properly. Logically the web is a place to attain information as quickly and efficiently as possible. After all, that's why it was created. Web developers think logic, efficiency, functionality.. and maybe design if it doesn't affect the integrity of the data flow diagrams they created in the planning phase of the systems development life cycle.

Accessible and sensible, efficiently coded and highly compatible; websites that web developers produce work. Plain and simple. No time for flashy visuals because the load time will increase. Why design a graphical button when with half the code and one third of the bandwidth you can have a text link that performs the same task? Think of all the money you can save if your site is programmed as efficiently as possible. Logically, a web developer is right.

The answer is... (drumrolll please)...
It depends.

I know, that's not the answer you wanted to hear, but it was either that or "both". Your designer and your developer are both right, although neither will likely admit it. If you own a design studio, or your are in entertainment, chances are good you will be leaning towards the advice of your designer. After all, creativity is more valued in your industry then say, software development. If you are a software development company, you may be leaning towards your web developer's advice because efficient systems are more important to people in your industry.

But what about the average web site owner? Maybe you have an online store, a real estate agency, a retail business, you are a member of a virtual community or something else that is not as black and white as a design firm or a development team. The fact of the matter is you have to weigh the options against your company's values and goals to make the appropriate decisions if the designer and the developer ever clash. In all cases your site needs to look good, and in all cases your site needs to function properly. The choice shouldn't ever boil down to one or the other.

This is why there are both web designers and web developers. They are the yin and the yang of building websites. If your company doesn't have a little of both involved in creating or maintaining your website, you may have some unbalanced karma with your click throughs and conversions.

Microsoft vs. Open Source: Who Will Win?

Want to get a heated debate going among technologists? Ask them this question: Can the open source software movement defeat (or severely cripple) Microsoft in the marketplace?
With little academic attention focused on this question, Harvard Business School professors Pankaj Ghemawat and Ramon Casadesus-Masanell decided to dive in. Most research to date into the OSS movement has focused on the organization and management issues surrounding OSS. Ghemawat and Casadesus-Masanell chose to explore the fundamental competitive dynamics question: Will OSS ever displace traditional software from its market leadership position?

"We believe that there is still a great deal of confusion and puzzlement on how this competitive battle will develop," say the authors of the academic paper Dynamic Mixed Duopoly: A Model Motivated by Linux vs. Windows, which has just been accepted for publication in a special issue of Management Science.
Ultimately, the authors believe, neither side is likely to be forced from the battlefield—Microsoft has too much market share and OSS offers too many benefits for users. But there are strategies each can use successfully against the other, as they detail in this e-mail interview.
